MORE INFORMATION
Originating in Sicily, this fabulous White Grape Vine Bonsai is a very productive plant that with bunches of delicious grapes in every autumn. Usually vigorous climbers, this bonsai variety is a far more compact plant that has a thick, heavily patterned trunk, that is home to bunches of grapes that will hang in decorative clusters. Very easy to grow, plant them in a sunny spot in the garden and water it regularly. Self-fertile, the tasty fruits on this grape vine will be ready to be picked when ripe in late summer to early autumn. To maintain your bonsai shape, cut it back annually, down to the woody stem. This will also keep your grape vine to approximately 100cm tall and will allow for new growth the following year. Delivered as an established white grape plant in a 15cm pot, ready to pot on.

Top Tips

Your vine will grow as tall as you let it. Commercially plants are cut back to maximum 1.4m every 2 -3 years  by pollarding to allow easy picking of the grapes. Your plant can be cut back annually to the woody stem to keep Bonsai at 1m max, leaving at least 2 buds per stem to carry the following year's crop of grapes.

Care Guide

Care of your white grape bonsai:

  • Keep it outside in either full sun or partial shade.
  • The grapevine bonsai needs between eight and 10 hours of indirect sunlight each day, along with good air circulation.
  • Protect from extreme cold and if brought indoors, plants should be kept out of direct light.
  • Water thoroughly at least every other day, daily if the weather is warm and ensure that the soil never dries out, although don't allow the plant to stand in water.
  • Use a liquid feed every 2 weeks during the growing season.
  • Grapes are deciduous so lose their leaves in winter and you can water less - once a week should be sufficient.
  • Repot the grape bonsai every two or three years. At that time, prune back to root ball.

Pruning your White Bonsai Grape Plant:

  • Plant will put on a lot of growth in spring. Prune back new shoots to prevent them from getting leggy.
  • Prune off any misplaced, suckers and shoots from the base to leave the trunk bare.
  • Prune back to the main frame in autumn, leaving one or two buds for the next season's grapes.
  • Avoid pruning in spring and summer - the main pruning time is late November or December. Pruning later can cause the vine to bleed sap, weakening the plant.
  • Cut roots back to 1/3rd every other year and replant your bonsai in a pot deeper than 3 in filled with free draining soil.
  • As with other bonsai trees, wire may be used to shape branches. Leave the wire in place for up to six months in order to bend the branches in the shape desired.
