Care Guide

How to grow ‘Red Sun’ shallots

  • Unpack your shallot sets as soon as delivered and spread them out in a cool, light and airy place, away from frosts, until you are ready to plant. Ideally, plant them within a month from receipt.
  • Choose a sunny position in the garden that hasn’t been used to grow onions, garlic or leeks before and hasn’t been manured for at least 2 years.
  • For best results, dig over the soil before planting to aerate and remove weeds. A general-purpose fertiliser added to the soil before planting will help maximise yields.
Ideally, plant the sets outdoors from February into April. They can be planted earlier, from October, if an early crop is desired, but they will need protection from extreme cold – perhaps in a greenhouse or tunnel.
  • Plant directly into the soil, about 3cm (1˝in) deep, so that the tip of the set is at soil level, and at 12-15cm (4˝-6in) apart with 30cm (12in) between rows to allow plenty of room for them to spread out. Firm the soil and keep watered through the growing season as necessary; do not allow the soil to dry out or become waterlogged.
  • Keep weed-free and protect from birds while the plants are young.
  • Sets will mature in 14-18 weeks.
  • Harvest when the leaves turn yellow. Gently loosen the soil around the bulb before gently lifting. Then brush the soil away and allow the shallots to dry outdoors in the sunshine. Store in a cool, dry, frost-free place, where they will keep for up to 8 months.
