Small Gardens can be more of a blessing than a curse if they are planned properly. Cramming as many plants as possible into your garden can seem tempting when you’re lacking space, but it won’t do you any good in the long run.

Cottage garden

In a cottage garden, a mixture of climbing roses, ramblers and foxgloves will add height and save space. Add low growing lavender, compact roses and evergreen to cover the ground. 

With pastel shades, large blooms and rustic features, a cottage garden is ideal for the front of your home as well as a smaller back garden. Split the garden in two by creating a stepping stone path right to the back, this will enable you to reach all of your plants and create the impression of more space.

However, cottage garden flowers will often spill over paths and roam up walls making the look too confusing and cluttered for some. A small space with a minimalist design may be more your style. Minimalist gardens are less maintenance, more formal and usually feature a lawn or decking.

Minimalist garden

Plan your minimalist garden in detail; be imaginative with shapes and material as plants may not be as prevalent in your design. Aim to create curves using hedging, a lawn, a patio or decking to give the illusion of more space. This will also keep your garden interesting but uncluttered. 

It’s best to stick to one colour scheme in this type of garden, we recommend filling your garden with green hedges, lawn and grasses to add structure and interest while maintaining a uniform look.

In both a cottage garden and minimalist garden, you must make sure that any plants you grow in your garden are compact, disease-free and long, repeat flowering. This will limit plant size and maintenance while saving space and ensuring you have colour all year round.
