Description

If you're short on space but big on flavour, Raspberry 'Lowberry Ruby Best' might just be your dream fruit bush. It's compact, completely thornless, and perfectly suited to growing in pots or small garden corners. Whether you've got a patio, a balcony or just a single spare container, you can enjoy home-grown raspberries with ease.

This summer-fruiting raspberry grows to just 60cm tall with a naturally bushy habit, making it easy to manage and a real feature plant even before the fruit arrives. Its foliage is lush and tidy, and when the flowers bloom in May, you know sweet rewards are just around the corner.

In June, the first berries begin to ripen on the previous season's shoots. Each fruit is dark red, medium in size and full of sweet yet tangy flavour, just what you want from a proper raspberry. As the berries swell, they lean gently over the edge of the pot for easy picking, while new shoots stay clean and undisturbed in the centre.

Pruning is simple too. Once fruiting is finished, cut out the old stems at the base and lightly thin the new ones by about a third. This keeps the plant healthy and stops it from becoming overcrowded. No wires, no supports, no complicated techniques, just easy, rewarding fruit growing.

Supplied as an established plant in a 1 litre pot, ready to plant.

Top Tips

A great performer in pots, but this variety can also be planted directly into a garden bed, but make sure the soil is free-draining and not prone to waterlogging.

Care Information

When Your Plant Arrives

  • Your raspberry will arrive as an established plant in a 1 litre pot, ready to plant.
  • Unpack it straight away and give it a drink of water if the compost feels dry.
  • Stand it outside in a sheltered, sunny spot for a couple of days to let it acclimatise.
  • Choose a sunny, sheltered position for the best results. This variety is ideal for pots, so use a container that's at least 25-30cm in diameter with good drainage holes.
  • Fill it with quality multi-purpose compost, preferably mixed with some well-rotted organic matter if you have it.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and gently tease out any matted roots.
  • Plant it so the top of the rootball is level with the surface of the compost. Firm in and water thoroughly.

Ongoing Care

  • Keep the compost moist, especially during dry spells and while the plant is getting established.
  • In summer, pots may need watering daily, particularly when the fruit is developing.
  • Avoid letting the compost dry out completely.
  • A hardy variety. In colder regions or if grown in a pot, protect roots in winter by moving the container to a sheltered spot or wrapping it in fleece or bubble wrap.
