Description

No, your eyes are not deceiving you! This extraordinary hardy hibiscus standard really does produce three different flower colours on the same tree, and it will continue doing so year after year.

Hibiscus are commonly propagated by grafting, and skilled nurserymen have carefully grafted three separate varieties, flowering in blue, pink and white, onto the top of one strong standard stem.

While standards are normally created using several grafts of the same variety, this unusual combination produces a wonderfully colourful and distinctive result.

Crucially, all three varieties have been specially selected for their similar growth rates, helping each colour develop evenly without one taking over. This makes it far more dependable than plants formed by plaiting three separate hibiscus stems together.

Simply give the crown an annual trim to maintain its shape, and this remarkable mix will continue looking spectacular for years.

Hibiscus syriacus is fully hardy in the UK, although it performs best in a warm, sunny position and responds particularly well to regular feeding, including trace elements.

Flowering during August and September, it creates an unforgettable late-summer display that is certain to impress friends, family and neighbours.

Supplied as a grafted tree 0.8–1m tall in a 3 litre pot, ready to plant out. Note: dormant with no leaves from October to March.

Top Tips
  • Feed weekly in Spring and summer with balanced feed with micronutrients...
Care Information
  • The Rose of Sharon grows well in average soil and once established requires very little care - withstanding periods of drought.
  • It also tolerates summer heat and humidity.
  • Grow in a sheltered spot in full sun with a humus-rich moist soil, keep well-watered as these plants don't like to dry out.
  • Happy in a large container as long as you keep it well-watered. Protect the crown with a dry mulch through the winter months.
  • Trim any dead or damaged growth each year in mid spring and remove faded flowers.
  • Hibiscus flower on the current season's growth, so pruning encourages them to flower prolifically.
  • Hibiscus can be bare of leaves right up until May, so don't think that your plant has expired - keep it well watered and it will burst into life when ready!
