Description

All the fragrance of traditional lilacs, but in a far more manageable size. This Fragrant Dwarf Lilac Collection is a brilliant choice for patios, courtyards and smaller gardens.

These compact lilacs make it so much easier to enjoy that much-loved sweet, floral perfume right where it matters most. They are ideal for containers and wonderfully rewarding, filling your garden with colour and scent at the very time people most want to be outside enjoying it.

Unlike larger lilac varieties that can quickly outgrow their space, these carefully selected compact forms stay neat and easy to manage. That means less pruning, less worry and far more enjoyment year after year. A simple deadhead of spent blooms helps keep the display looking its best and encourages the longest possible flowering performance.

Supplied as a pair of established plants in 3 litre pots, ready to plant, including one each of:

  • Lilac 'Palibin' - An RHS Award of Garden Merit-winning variety. Double-flowering and compact, flowering first in May, flush through summer, before reaching a second crescendo of colour in September. Lavender pink flowers set against dark green leaves.
  • Lilac 'Little Rosie' - Possibly the most compact Lilac available! Growing to just 100cm tall across five years, with perfumed dark cherry-pink flowers set against darker green leaves than most other varieties.
Top Tips
Pot-grown shrubs can be planted at any time of the year as long as the soil is not waterlogged or frozen. If in doubt, err towards spring but remember to keep pots well-watered so that the soil does not dry out.
Care Information
  • Grow lilac plants in fertile, well drained soil in full sun.
  • Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season while young plants become established.
  • Lilac can be pruned in winter or spring by removing any damaged, diseased or misplaced stems. In mid-summer, faded flowers can be removed from the plants.
  • After pruning, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost to the base of the lilac.

To Plant:

  • Shrub roots generally tend to spread out rather than down, so dig a planting hole 3 x wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting, and mix some well rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill one the shrub is in place.
  • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.
  • Water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
