Description

Vitex agnus-castus 'Queen Bee' brings long-lasting lavender purple flower spikes, aromatic foliage and excellent pollinator value from midsummer into early autumn, helping your garden stay colourful and active later in the season.

The distinctive palmate leaves create a handsome, textured backdrop, and they release a lovely fragrance when touched. This makes 'Queen Bee' particularly attractive near a patio, pathway or seating area. The upright flower panicles add height and colour without making the plant feel too large or unruly.

Growing to around 120cm tall and 100cm wide, this compact Chaste Tree suits smaller gardens, sunny borders and larger containers. Once established, it copes well with heat and dry conditions, provided the soil drains freely.

The nectar-rich blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects, making this a fine choice for wildlife-friendly planting. In colder gardens, offer winter protection, particularly during harsh weather.

Supplied as an established plant in a 2 litre pot, ready to plant.

Top Tips
  • Winter protection is important in colder parts of the UK.
  • Apply a thick mulch around the base in autumn, keeping it away from the main stem. In cold weather, protect the top growth with horticultural fleece.
  • Move potted plants into a cold greenhouse, porch, conservatory or against a sheltered house wall during frost.
Care Information

On Arrival:

  • Unpack the plant as soon as it arrives and remove all packaging carefully.
  • Check the compost and water lightly if it feels dry.
  • Stand the plant somewhere bright and sheltered for a day or two before planting.
  • If the plant has been in transit, allow it to settle before placing it in strong sun or exposed wind.

To Plant:

  • Plant in a sunny, sheltered position, ideally against a warm wall or in a protected border.
  • Choose free-draining soil, as Vitex dislikes sitting in cold, wet ground.
  • Dig a hole slightly wider than the 2L nursery pot and loosen the soil at the base.
  • Remove the plant from its pot, place it at the same depth as it was growing, then backfill and firm gently.
  • Water well after planting to help the roots settle.

Ongoing Care

  • Water regularly during the first growing season while the plant establishes.
  • Once established, it copes well with dry spells, but water during prolonged hot weather.
  • Feed in spring with a general-purpose slow-release fertiliser.
  • Trim lightly in spring to remove any dead or damaged growth and keep a neat shape.
  • Remove faded flower stems after blooming if a tidier look is preferred.
