Description

Climbing Rose 'Penny Lane' brings the softness and romance of an established cottage garden to walls, fences and arches, creating a memorable flower-filled focal point.

The blooms are its great attraction. Champagne-cream petals are lightly washed with blush, while the centres deepen through gentle pink and apricot tones. Rather than presenting one uniform colour, each flower has a warm, layered appearance that changes subtly as it opens.

A delicate fruity fragrance accompanies the flowers through summer. In warm, humid evening air, the scent becomes especially noticeable, making this a lovely choice beside a doorway, path, arch or outdoor seating area where it can be appreciated at close range.

This award-winning climbing rose is valued for its reliable performance and long flowering season. Reaching around 3m, it can cover useful vertical space while keeping beds and borders free for lower-growing plants. Train the stems onto wires, trelliswork or another sturdy support to guide the display exactly where it is wanted.

Fully hardy and versatile, ‘Penny Lane’ combines ornamental impact with lasting garden value. Use it to soften a plain boundary, frame an entrance or create a flower-filled route from one part of the garden to another.

Supplied as 1 bare root climbing rose, ready to plant.

Top Tips
Add mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help the plant establish quicker.
Care Information

Bare Root Rose Planting Advice:

  • Roses can be planted at any time of the year, as long as the soil is not frozen, waterlogged or drought dry.
  • Plant your rose where it can get plenty of sun for at least half of the day, and where it will be sheltered from the wind.
  • Add plenty of well-rotted manure into the hole and plant so that the graft union (the swollen are when the stems meet the roots) is just below soil level.

Aftercare Advice:

  • Water well every other day - daily if the weather is hot and dry.
  • Established roses can be watered around once a week through spring and summer - more if the weather is hot.
  • For best results, feed roses in late-March/April and again in late July.

Pruning Advice:

  • To prune, just remove any dead, dying, damaged and diseased stems and also deadhead regularly.
  • Traditionally, you would cut just above a leaf joint with a sloping cut away from the bud, however, this isn't necessary, and don’t worry about pruning too much - roses are very resilient and will grow back.
  • When pruning, make sure that your secateurs are clean and sharp to prevent squashing stems and introducing disease.
