Description

Imagine transforming your garden's vertical spaces into vibrant, living walls of green and white. Hydrangea 'Petiolaris', commonly known as the Climbing Hydrangea, offers just that opportunity.

This self-clinging climber is a marvel for gardeners seeking to add dimension and life to otherwise plain walls, fences, or even large trees.

Its lush, heart-shaped leaves create a dense foliage backdrop, which in early summer becomes adorned with delicate, white lacecap flowers, each up to 20cm across. These blossoms not only add visual appeal but also serve as a valuable resource for pollinators.

One of the standout qualities of 'Petiolaris' is its adaptability, as it thrives in both full sun and partial shade, making it suitable for a variety of garden aspects.

While it can reach impressive heights of over 12m, its growth is gradual, allowing for easy management and training to suit your space. In autumn, the foliage turns yellow before falling, giving way to the plant's attractive peeling bark, adding winter interest.

Supplied as a set of three established plants in 9cm pots, ready to plant.

Top Tips

Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.

Care Information

Planting Advice:

  • Really low maintenance, this variety prefers compost-enriched soil that stays moist. It can be planted in sun or partial shade, and will withstand drought once established.
  • Shrub roots generally tend to spread out rather than down, so dig a planting hole three times wider than the roots of the shrub you're planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill one the shrub is in place. Use the best compost you can buy and some sand or grit for drainage.
  • Before planting, soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain. Then remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling) and firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball, then water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
  • If you're planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast.
