Description

Few perennials bring height to a border without making it feel crowded quite like Verbena bonariensis!

Tall, slender stems rise above neighbouring plants, carrying clusters of dainty purple flowers from summer into autumn. Because the growth is so open and airy, other plants remain clearly visible through it.

Plant it among ornamental grasses, echinaceas, rudbeckias, salvias or other sun-loving perennials and it will weave the whole planting scheme together. The flowers also attract bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects, bringing valuable movement and life to your garden over a long season.

Verbena bonariensis is a proven performer and holder of the RHS Award of Garden Merit. It copes well in sunny borders, grows with impressive vigour and continues to look effective long after many summer perennials have faded. Leave the dried flower heads standing into winter and they will add extra shape and texture to the border.

Once established, it may also self-seed naturally, creating additional plants and a relaxed, drifting effect through the garden.

Supplied as a set of three established plants in 9cm pots, ready to plant.

Top Tips

Leave faded flower heads on the plant over winter, to provide structure in the garden as well as shelter for hibernating insects.

Care Information
  • When planting, grow in well-drained, moderately fertile soil in full sun.
  • Dig a hole that is slightly deeper than the supplied pot, and three times the width.
  • Remove the plant from the pot and tease out some of the roots.
  • Place in the hole at the same level of the pot then refill the hole with the earth removed.
  • Firm in around the hole with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well, before adding mulch to the base.
  • Any potted or container Verbena needs to be watered regularly to avoid the compost for drying out. Hot weather requires daily watering. Avoid wetting the leaves as this can cause some fungal disease.
  • Apply mulch to the surrounding soil to help hold in moisture.
  • Verbena bonariensis can suffer dieback in harsh winters if cut back in autumn, so it's best to leave the plant until spring and cut back the old growth when you see the new shoots emerging at the base.
