Description

Nothing gives a sunny garden that relaxed, aromatic, cottage-style feeling quite like English lavender. Simply fantastic for fragrance, whether edging a pathway, softening a patio display, filling a sunny container or fronting a border.

The silver-grey foliage looks attractive even before the flowers open, while the richly scented summer flower spikes bring classic colour and perfume in summer. Bees, butterflies and other beneficial insects are drawn to the blooms, helping your garden feel alive as well as beautiful.

This hardy, easy-going variety thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Once established, it copes well with dry conditions, ideal for warm, open positions, gravel-style planting and low-maintenance gardens. Keep plants compact and tidy by trimming lightly after flowering, then pruning again in early spring. The aromatic stems can also be cut and dried for indoor fragrance.

Supplied as a set of three established plants in 9cm pots, ready to plant.

Top Tips
In late summer, clip the plants back lightly after the flowers have faded. Cut the stems back by a few inches, but not so far that the stems are bare of live foliage, and plants will then have time to produce new shoots before winter dormancy.
Care Information
  • This drought-tolerant plant thrives in a sunny border, container, herb or gravel gardens.
  • Lavender can be planted at any time of the year, as long as soil conditions are not frozen or waterlogged, but for best results plant between April and May when the soil is starting to warm up.
  • Lavender thrives in most free-draining soils in full sun. Heavier soils should have some grit added to improve drainage and to open them up.
  • Space plants 90cm apart, or if growing a hedge, 30cm apart or, 45cm for larger cultivars.
  • Lavender can be grown in large pots, 30-40cm diameter, using a multipurpose or loam-based compost, with some extra coarse grit, roughly a third, to improve drainage, along with some controlled release fertiliser granules.
