Visually arresting Red Hot Pokers - there really is nothing quite like it! These hardy herbaceous summer-flowering perennials boast fiery rockets of flowers and grass-like foliage. Tiny tubes decorate each flower, filled with nectar to attract pollinators.

A real problem-solver, growing up to around 1m tall and thriving in those sunnier, dry spots in the middle of a border, where many others may struggle. Easy to grow and terrific drought-tolerant garden plants, Red Hot Pokers are excellent additions to city and coastal gardens and look great in the middle of wildlife borders and gravel gardens - as well as traditional cottage-garden style plantings.

Supplied as a set of five bare roots, ready to plant.

Top Tips

Incorporate horticultural grit to the planting hole if your soil is heavy clay, to open it up and improve drainage.

Care Information

Planting Advice:

  • Best grown in a well-drained, but not over-fertile soil, plants bloom best in full sun.
  • Water your potted plant well.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.
  • Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.

Aftercare Advice:

  • Mulch young plants with straw or leaves or cover with fleece for their first winter.
  • Taking Care of Kniphofia.
  • Water container-grown plants regularly over the summer. Apply a light fertilizer in spring or early summer.

Pruning Advice:

  • Deadhead after flowering. Leave the old foliage on the plant to protect the crown over winter. Tidy plants in spring by pulling away dead and damaged leaves from the base, which will also allow you to check for slugs and snails.
