Description

Echinacea are among the most versatile and rewarding perennials you can grow, and the 'Breeders' Mix is especially exciting. It offers a kaleidoscope of flower shapes and colours that keeps you guessing from one plant to the next. Each summer, your garden becomes a stage for an unpredictable show of daisy-like blooms that stand proudly on strong stems, making a bold statement in beds, borders or pots.

Flowering begins in June and continues through to November's chills, so you'll enjoy reliable colour right through to autumn, with plants that soar up to 100cm tall. The flowers themselves vary enormously, as some boast classic petals and others are quilled or ruffled, showing off shades spanning pink, purple, white, orange and more.

They thrive in sunny, well-drained soil, cope brilliantly with dry conditions once established, and come back year after year with strength and vigour. Plus, their wildlife value is extraordinary! Bees and butterflies flock to them, while the prominent seedheads left over in winter provide food for birds and visual interest in frosty borders.

They are also superb cut flowers, with long stems and lasting vase life, so you'll have plenty to bring indoors as well as enjoy outdoors.

Supplied as a set of six bare root plants, ready to plant.

Top Tips
Plant echinacea in groups or drifts for maximum impact. Not only will the mass of colour look amazing, but pollinators will find them irresistible, keeping your garden buzzing with life all summer.
Care Information

On Arrival:

  • Open your package as soon as it arrives and check the bare roots.
  • Soak the roots in a bucket of cool, clean water for 2-3 hours to rehydrate them before planting.
  • If you can’t plant right away, wrap them in damp newspaper or pop them in moist compost in a cool, frost-free spot. Don’t allow them to dry out.

Planting:

  • Choose a sunny position with well-drained soil. Echinacea thrive in light, open conditions and dislike waterlogged sites.
  • Prepare the soil by digging in compost or well-rotted manure to boost establishment.
  • Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots comfortably. Place the crown (where the shoots meet the roots) level with the soil surface.
  • Backfill, firm the soil gently and water thoroughly.
  • Space plants about 40-60cm apart to allow for their spread as they mature.

Aftercare:

  • Keep the soil evenly moist while plants establish during their first season.
  • Once established, echinacea are drought tolerant, needing only the occasional deep soak in extended dry spells.
  • Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring as growth begins to give them a boost.
  • Deadhead spent flowers regularly to prolong the flowering season.
  • Leave some seedheads on the plants in autumn, as they will provide food for birds and look attractive through winter.
  • Cut stems back to ground level in late autumn or early spring.
  • Mulch around the crown in autumn to enrich the soil and help conserve moisture.
