Description

Few plants capture the spirit of a cottage garden quite like Gypsophila 'Baby's Breath'. With its clouds of tiny white flowers, it brings an ethereal quality to borders that no other perennial can match. A true florist's favourite for cut vase displays, and often used in wedding day bouquets.

From midsummer onwards, each plant bursts into a frothy haze of blossom, creating a veil of bloom that shimmers in sunlight and sways in the breeze. It's a scene straight from a country garden painting... Soft, airy, and endlessly romantic.

Hardy and resilient, Gypsophila is even surprisingly easy to grow. Once established, it requires little attention, thrives in free-draining soil, and copes well with dry spells. That reliability, combined with its sheer beauty, makes it a favourite with both beginners and seasoned gardeners.

In borders, it weaves effortlessly between other plants, softening bright colours and adding depth. With roses it's a dream pairing, giving a timeless English garden look. In cutting gardens, it's invaluable, producing endless sprays of flowers for arrangements, bouquets, and indoor vases. Pollinators love it too, so while it enchants you, it supports bees and butterflies at the same time.

Plant them once, and they'll reward you for years, returning stronger each summer with increasingly lavish displays.

Supplied as a set of 10 bare root plants, ready to plant.

Top Tips
Plant your Gypsophila in drifts or groups of three or more for the most spectacular cloud effect. The more you plant together, the stronger the billowing haze of white flowers looks, especially alongside roses or lavender.
Care Information

On Arrival:

  • Open the package straight away and unwrap the bare roots.
  • Check the roots are firm and healthy. If they look a little dry after transit, soak them in a bucket of lukewarm water for a couple of hours to rehydrate before planting.
  • If you can’t plant immediately, keep the roots in a cool, frost-free place, loosely wrapped in damp newspaper or compost to stop them drying out.

How To Plant

  • Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil. Gypsophila hates sitting in soggy conditions. A raised bed or sandy soil is ideal.
  • Prepare the ground by removing weeds and working in some coarse grit or sand if your soil is heavy.
  • Dig a hole wide enough to spread out the roots. Set each root crown so it sits just below soil level.
  • Space plants 30-40cm apart to allow their airy sprays of flowers room to spread.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water well.

Ongoing Care

  • Water regularly while plants are establishing in their first season. Once established, Gypsophila is drought tolerant and only needs water in prolonged dry spells.
  • After the first main flush of flowers, cut the stems back by half to encourage a second round of blooms later in the season. At the end of autumn, cut stems down to ground level.
  • Gypsophila is fully hardy in UK gardens so winter should not be an issue. Protect young plants in very wet soils by ensuring good drainage over winter.
