Description

Capture the spirit of an English summer in your garden with 'Russell Hybrid' Lupins. A spectacular mix of bold colours and towering flower spikes that transform borders from late spring through midsummer.

Each plant sends up tall, upright stems packed tightly with pea-like blooms in a range of shades. Set above rich green foliage, the effect is simply magical.

Hardy and reliable, these lupins are remarkably easy to grow. Once established, they return year after year, flowering more abundantly with each performance. They don't just provide colour, they add height, structure, and definition to your borders, making them invaluable for designing layers of planting.

Wildlife will thank you too, as bees and butterflies flock to the nectar-rich blooms, filling your garden with movement and life while the flower spikes stand proud like living sculptures.

With so many plants, you can create drifts of colour that sweep across a border, or mix them through beds for repeated bursts of floral fireworks. You can even cut stems for arrangements indoors. Their upright shape and striking hues look fantastic in a vase.

Supplied as a set of 10 bare roots, ready to plant.

Top Tips
Lupins don't like being disturbed once planted, so choose their position carefully and let them settle. For the most spectacular display, plant your 10 bare roots in groups of three or more to create bold drifts of colour.
Care Information

On Arrival:

  • Open your package straight away and carefully unwrap the bare roots.
  • If the roots look a little dry, soak them in a bucket of lukewarm water for 2-3 hours before planting.
  • If you can't plant immediately, keep them in a cool, frost-free place. Wrap them loosely in slightly damp newspaper or store them in a pot of moist compost until you’re ready.

How To Plant:

  • Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with well-drained soil. Lupins dislike sitting in heavy, waterlogged ground.
  • Improve the soil by digging in some garden compost if it's very poor or sandy.
  • Dig a hole wide enough to spread out the roots. Position the crown (where the shoots meet the roots) just below soil level.
  • Space each root 30-45cm apart, as lupins form substantial clumps when mature.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water well to settle them in.

Ongoing Care

  • Keep the soil moist during the first growing season while plants establish. Once settled, lupins are fairly drought tolerant and usually only need water in dry spells.
  • Feeding should only be needed if flowering is poor. A potassium-rich fertiliser can be applied to boost flowering.
  • Cut back faded flower spikes as soon as blooms go over. This often encourages a second flush later in summer. In autumn, trim stems down to ground level once foliage has died back.
