Description

Put on a show with Saponaria ocymoides 'Tumbling Ted'. With its cascades of tiny rose-pink flowers, it creates a frothy carpet of colour that looks as though it's poured itself over walls, rockeries, and containers.

From May onwards, every stem bursts into flower, covering the plant in hundreds of blooms that last well into summer. The effect is magical... Soft, colourful, and cheerful, and because the plant stays low without exceeding 10cm or so tall, it never overwhelms but instead enhances every edge, nook, and cranny it touches.

Hardy and undemanding, this perennial is a brilliant choice for beginners as well as seasoned gardeners. Once planted, it needs very little in the way of care. It copes with drought once established, thrives in well-drained soil, and asks only for a sunny spot to really shine.

And pollinators can�t resist it! Bees and butterflies flock to the nectar-rich blooms, adding life and movement alongside the colour.

With 10 bare root plants, you can create generous drifts of tumbling colour, cascade them over a wall, brighten the front of borders, or fill awkward corners of the garden with something truly eye-catching.

Top Tips

For the most dramatic tumbling effect, plant your bare roots near the edge of a wall, container, or raised bed and let them spill naturally over the sides.

Care Information

On Arrival:

Unpack the bare roots immediately.
If they look a little dry after transit, soak them in lukewarm water for 2-3 hours to rehydrate.
If you can't plant straight away, keep them in a cool, frost-free place wrapped in slightly damp newspaper, or pot them up temporarily in moist compost until ready.

How To Plant:

Choose a sunny spot with free-draining soil. 'Tumbling Ted' hates sitting in soggy ground. Rockeries, wall edges, and containers are ideal.
Prepare the soil by removing weeds and mixing in grit or sand if your ground is heavy.
Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots out comfortably. Position the crown (where the shoots meet the roots) just below soil level.
Space plants around 30-40cm apart so they have room to spread and cascade.
Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water well to settle them in.

Ongoing Care:

Water regularly during the first season while roots establish. After that, Saponaria is drought tolerant and only needs watering in prolonged dry spells.
Lightly trim after flowering to keep plants neat and encourage fresh growth. In autumn, cut back any dead or untidy stems to maintain shape.

Although most plants are extremely tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme of weather conditions, we always avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme frosts or heat is forecast. We also avoid dispatching orders over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. If you have ordered a 'pre-order' item, these will be sent out as soon as possible after the quoted dispatch date and we generally ship your entire order with any pre-ordered items. Once your order has been dispatched, we will send you an email with details on how you can track it.

We send most of our orders via a fully tracked courier service with Yodel. We will send you a tracking link as soon as your order has been dispatched. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, we will not require a signature on delivery, and we ask out couriers to leave your item in a safe place ad your delivery address.
