Description

Crocosmia 'Firestars Firestarter' is a dazzling new introduction that sparks the border into life with blazing summer colour. Part of the Firestars series, which was bred for compact clumps, starry two-tone flowers and extraordinary impact with minimum effort.

Commonly known as a Montbretia, with star-like flowers in golden yellow, edged in vivid orange, with a glowing orange-red eye and a central stripe. Planted in drifts, the effect is breathtaking, with sprays of fiery flowers rising above sword-like foliage that moves beautifully in the breeze.

Hardy and dependable, this Crocosmia shrugs off poor weather, resists most garden pests, and returns reliably year after year. That makes it a superb choice whether you're new to gardening or have years of experience. Once established, clumps expand steadily, giving you more flowers each season and delivering incredible value.

'Firestarter' blooms from midsummer into autumn, ensuring the garden doesn't fade when other plants are past their best. It partners wonderfully with echinacea, rudbeckia, asters and ornamental grasses, creating combinations that glow with late season energy. And for those who like cut flowers, its sprays make striking additions to indoor arrangements.

It's easy to grow too. Plant the bare roots in well-drained soil, water them in, and then simply enjoy the show. With such minimal fuss, you can achieve a professional display that feels rich, bold and long lasting.

Supplied as a set of five bare roots, ready to plant.

Top Tips
For maximum impact, plant Crocosmia in groups or drifts. Their sword-like foliage adds height and structure, while the fiery flowers glow brightest when planted in bold swathes.
Care Information

On Arrival:

  • Unpack your bare roots immediately and check they are firm and healthy.
  • If they look a little dry after transit, don't worry. Simply soak them in a bucket of cool water for 2-3 hours before planting.
  • If you can't plant them straight away, keep the roots in their packaging in a cool, frost-free place for a few days, but don’t let them dry out.

How to Plant:

  • Choose a sunny or lightly shaded spot with free-draining soil. Crocosmia don't like sitting in waterlogged conditions.
  • Dig over the soil, adding organic matter or compost to improve drainage if needed.
  • Plant the bare roots around 8-10cm deep and space them 15-20cm apart. Place the pointed tips upwards.
  • Cover with soil, firm gently, and water well to settle them in.
  • For pots, use a good quality multi-purpose compost with added grit for drainage. Make sure containers have holes at the base.

Ongoing Care:

  • Water well after planting and during dry spells in the first growing season. Once established, Crocosmia are quite drought tolerant and only need occasional watering in prolonged dry weather.
  • After flowering, allow the foliage to die back naturally. This helps store energy for the following year. Cut the faded stems and leaves to the ground in late autumn or early spring.
  • Over time, Crocosmia form dense clumps. If they become overcrowded and flowering reduces, lift and divide the clumps in spring every 3–4 years, replanting the healthiest roots to refresh growth.
