Description

'Red Ninja' breaks through the traditional hosta colour palette with intensely coloured foliage - it's even earned the title of RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year 2026!

Broad leaves emerge with deep purple-red centres, crisp green margins and vivid red stems. Most importantly, that colour is not simply a fleeting spring effect. The rich tones remain deep into summer, giving this compact perennial a remarkably long season of interest.

Place it in gentle morning sun, partial sun or bright dappled light to encourage its strongest colouring. In sunnier conditions, keep the soil reliably moist. Reaching around 35cm tall, it forms a neat, spreading mound suited to border edges, mixed planting, balconies and patio containers.

The display continues from late summer into early autumn when elegant purple flowers rise above the foliage. Fully hardy and straightforward to care for, 'Red Ninja' dies back naturally in winter before returning with fresh growth the following spring.

Supplied as a bare root plant, ready to plant.

Top Tips

Planting Depth: Plant with crown just below soil level, Planting Spacing: 45-60cm apart.

  • For best effect, plant where your hostas receive full sun for at least half of the day, but protect from midday sun. This will encourage the best leaf colour.
Care Information
  • Before planting, incorporate plenty of organic matter into the soil. Hostas prefer a rich, moisture retentive soil.
  • Create a hole just deep and wide enough for the roots. The aim is to bury just the roots, leaving the bases of the stems above ground.
  • Firm back around the soil, using your hand for small clumps and your heel on larger areas.
  • Keep plants well-watered and mulched with well-rotted organic matter.
  • Hostas can be grown in any container in a good, multi-purpose compost. Ensure that they are kept well-watered. Pot-grown hostas should be fed monthly with a general-purpose liquid feed.
  • Protect from slugs and snails.
  • If you find that your hosta is suffering from scorched leaves, move it to a shadier, more sheltered position.
