Description

Add natural, pollinator-friendly colour to the wilder corners of your garden with Camassia quamash. This really is a brilliant choice. It’s one of the most adaptable, easy-going bulbs you'll grow, and it ticks all the boxes for visual impact, resilience and long-term reward.

It starts early with long, narrow foliage that echoes the look of ornamental grasses, creating instant structure in mixed borders or informal settings. Then, come May, those grassy leaves give rise to tall spires of vivid blue, star-shaped flowers that stand upright and proud. You’ll often see them used to add movement and height in meadow-style displays, where they look incredible woven through other bulbs or perennials.

They absolutely love a moist spot, so they’re ideal for planting near water features, damp borders, or in that shady part of the lawn that never dries out. But they’ll also do well in regular borders too. They’re tough, fully hardy and reliably return year after year, multiplying as they go. You don’t need to fuss with staking or pruning, just plant and let them settle in.

Incredibly easy to combine, try growing alongside ornamental grasses, ferns or early perennials like geraniums and aquilegias for a soft, textural planting scheme that looks like it's been there forever.

Supplied as 50 bulbs, size 6+, ready to plant in autumn.

Top Tips
Fully hardy, leave bulbs to naturalise.
Care Information

Planting Advice:

  • Plant 10cm deep in fertile, well-drained soil in full sun with a little grit or sharp sand added to improved drainage.
  • Dig in well-rotted manure or compost to the soil before planting, which will help retain water.
  • Plant bulbs at twice the depth of the height of the bulb and four times their width apart. e.g. 5cm tall bulbs need to be planted 10cm below the surface of the ground and 20cm apart.
  • Please check the bag for any additional planting instructions.
  • They are fine to plant even if a little green growth is showing, they’ll just need a good watering when you plant them, and then only when the soil is dry.
  • While all the energy that a bulb needs in order to grow is stored in the bulb itself, they will do better if you feed them when in active green growth.
  • If planted in pots be sure to water frequently and keep moist.

Aftercare Advice:

  • Mulch over winter and leave in the ground to naturalise in warmer parts of the UK. If your area is frost-prone, in colder counties, grow them in a sheltered spot and lift them for the winter when the leaves turn brown.
  • If planted in pots, stop watering at the end of the summer and bring the pots under cover for the winter.
  • Allow the bulb leaves to die down naturally they can give you a long and lovely spring display.
  • Water freely through the summer.
  • If planted in pots be sure to water frequently and keep moist.
