Growing saffron at home might sound exotic, but it’s one of the easiest and most rewarding projects you can try in the garden. Saffron Crocus, also known as Crocus sativus, flowers in autumn, just when colour is most needed, and those blooms do more than look good, they’re the real deal. Each one gives you precious red stigmas, which you can harvest to create your own saffron spice.
It’s a proper ‘wow’ moment when you realise just how simple this is. These crocuses love sunny, well-drained spots and they don’t need much looking after. In fact, once planted, they’ll happily come back every year, naturalising, and increasing in number and forming cheerful drifts of lilac-purple flowers.
They’re ideal for pots, raised beds or a sunny patch in the border. And the more you plant, the more you’ll harvest. Whether you’re new to gardening or a seasoned grower, saffron crocuses are a joy to watch grow and even more rewarding to use.
This really is gardening with a difference, ornamental, edible, easy. Plant in late summer or early autumn.
Supplied as a set of 20 bulbs, size 9/10.
