Description

Fritillaria 'Lutea' brings theatre and unique colour to your late-spring garden, sending up strong upright stems topped with bright yellow, bell-like flowers and a leafy crown of bracts. Known as Crown Imperial, this hardy bulbous perennial adds height, shape and golden colour just when borders begin to build momentum for the season ahead.

Reaching up to around 90cm, it works beautifully towards the back of a sunny, well-drained border, where its statuesque habit rises above lower bulbs and spring perennials. The glossy pale green foliage forms attractive whorls along the stems, adding extra structure and interest before the blooms open.

This is a brilliant choice for gardeners who want something more distinctive than standard spring bulbs. It looks refined, unusual and wonderfully bold without needing complicated care. Plant in groups for a confident feature, combine with orange Crown Imperials for a fiery contrast, or use among herbaceous planting to create height and drama.

Fully hardy and easy to grow, Fritillaria 'Lutea' rewards simple planting with a memorable spring display.

Supplied as a pair of size 18/20 bulbs, ready to plant.

Top Tips
  • Plant bulbs on their sides to help to avoid water collecting in their hollow crowns and prevent the bulbs from rotting.
  • Fritillaria plants resent being dug up and moved so for best results plant where they will remain.
Care Information

Planting Advice:

  • Plant 30cm deep from September to November in fertile, well-drained soil, and keep an eye out for slug and snail damage when the new foliage is emerging in spring.
  • Plants benefit from early morning sun then light shade in the afternoon.
  • Avoid heavy clay or anywhere where water sits.
  • Heavy soil can be improved with the addition of sharp sand or horticultural grit.
  • Add 1cm of coarse sand to the planting hole before placing the bulbs pointed end up.

Aftercare Advice:

  • When growing fritillaries, it is essential to allow their foliage to die back naturally as this will feed the bulb for the following year.
  • During their dormant period the soil should be kept almost dry to prevent the bulbs from rotting. Begin watering sparingly as the bulbs start back into active growth.
  • After flowering has finished, trim off spent blossoms. The stalks will dry and then can be removed.

Trimming Advice:

  • Leave stems to turn brown before trimming back to the base. This will ensure that nutrients have been returned to the bulb for next season.
