Description

There is something about the English bluebell that no other spring bulb quite matches!

The colour is a deep, cool violet-blue that seems to glow in dappled shade, while the scent is soft, sweet and carried on the still spring air. And how about that feeling they bring to the garden? Something deeply familiar and rooted in the British countryside that stops you in your tracks every time.

These English bluebells are an RHS 'Plant for Pollinators', so bees and other beneficial insects love them too. Plant the bulbs in autumn in a partially shaded border, beneath trees or shrubs, or along the shaded side of a fence or hedge, and they will reward you year after year.

Each season the clumps grow a little more generous, the display a little more impressive, as the bulbs naturalise and multiply. Growing to around 40cm, the erect stems carry graceful, arching racemes of narrow tubular bells in mid to late spring, sitting beautifully against the glossy dark green foliage beneath.

Supplied as a set of 20 bulbs, size 6/7, ready to plant.

Top Tips
  • Plant as soon as you receive your bulbs, as early as you can in autumn so that the bulbs can establish a good root system before winter.
Care Information
  • Plant bulbs in groups in early autumn, with the pointed growing tip upwards, 10-15cm deep, 10cm apart, allowing room for clumps to naturalise and spread.
  • They thrive in well-drained soils, rich in organic matter. Apply an organic mulch to improve poor soil and water well after planting.
  • Best in dappled shade around the bases of trees and deciduous shrubs, or plant in grass or woodland, where they will naturalise easily. They are tolerant of full sun through to full shade.
  • If planting in grass, avoid mowing until the leaves have died back.
  • Bluebells can become overcrowded after a few years. Lift the bulbs after flowering and divide offsets and large clumps for replanting.
  • Add mycorrhizal fungi to the roots before planting to encourage faster and more reliable establishment.
