Description

A bold, colourful reminder that spring is on its way! Iris 'Purple Hill' is compact dwarf iris, with flowers from late winter to early spring, producing dark purple blooms with intricate darker purple, white and yellow markings. Against bare soil, gravel, stone or low containers, the colour looks wonderfully rich and jewel-like.

Reaching only around 15cm tall, this hardy bulbous perennial works best where it can be seen close up. Use it in sunny rockeries, alpine troughs, patio pots, low planters, border edges or planted through grass for a more natural effect. It also looks superb in generous groups, where the flowers create a stronger pool of colour than single bulbs dotted too far apart.

Fully hardy and easy to maintain, Iris 'Purple Hill' likes full sun and well-drained soil or compost. It is a fine choice for early colour without complicated care, and it combines beautifully with snowdrops, crocus, dwarf narcissi and other early spring bulbs.

To encourage iris bulbs to naturalise, choose a planting location where the soil is hot and dry during the summer months.

Care Information

Planting Advice for Iris reticulata:

Plant your irises where they will receive full sun in soil that drains well.
Heavy soil can be broken up by adding horticultural grit or sharp sand.
Plant bulbs at twice the depth of the height of the bulb and four times their width apart. e.g. 5cm tall bulbs need to be planted 10cm below the surface of the ground and 20cm apart.

They are fine to plant even if a little green growth is showing, they'll just need a good watering when you plant them, and then only when the soil is dry.

Aftercare Advice:

Leave them in the ground once they die back - they'll come back bigger and better each year.
While all the energy that a bulb needs in order to grow is stored in the bulb itself, they will do better if you feed them when in active green growth.
Plant in herbaceous borders, in pots, or leave in the ground to naturalise.
If planted in pots be sure to water frequently and keep moist.

Delivery Information

Our experienced team at the nursery will always carefully package and send your plants nursery fresh in the perfect condition to thrive once you receive and plant them. Although most plants are extremely tough and will not be affected by all but the most extreme of weather conditions, we always avoid dispatching the most perishable plants if extreme frosts or heat is forecast. We also avoid dispatching orders over Bank Holiday weekends.

Please allow us 3-5 working days to dispatch your order. If you have ordered a 'pre-order' item, these will be sent out as soon as possible after the quoted dispatch date and we generally ship your entire order with any pre-ordered items. Once your order has been dispatched, we will send you an email with details on how you can track it.

We send most of our orders via a fully tracked courier service with Yodel. We will send you a tracking link as soon as your order has been dispatched. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, we will not require a signature on delivery, and we ask out couriers to leave your item in a safe place ad your delivery address.

If you have delivery instruction and require our courier to leave your item in a specific place, please let us know - there is an option to leave a message for the courier at the checkout.

For smaller and single-item orders, we may send these via the post with Royal Mail - Tracking will not be available for orders sent via this method.
