Description

Bring a touch of Mediterranean glamour to your garden with this striking Bougainvillea, already trained against a trellis and ready to make an instant impression. Bursting with rich red bracts that gradually soften to pink as they mature.

The colourful papery bracts surround the small central flowers and create a bright, almost glowing display that lasts through the summer season. With its upright trellis-trained shape, it also adds welcome height and structure.

Ideal for a sunny, sheltered spot outdoors in the warmer months. Then, as temperatures begin to drop, it should be moved to a conservatory or greenhouse for protection through autumn and winter.

Supplied as an established plant in a 17cm pot, already 60-80cm tall, trained against a trellis, ready to plant and display.

Top Tips
Protect from frost by moving to an indoor spot for winter, before growing in a sun-soaked spot of the garden through summer.
Care Information

Planting Your Bougainvillea:

  • For UK gardeners, it is recommended to grow this variety in a pot or container. Bougainvilleas thrive in pots, which makes it easier to move them indoors for winter protection.
  • Pick a container at least 30cm wide with drainage holes, filled with a mix of multi-purpose compost and grit or sand.
  • Prepare a planting hole twice the width of the existing root ball and roughly the same depth.
  • Carefully remove this plant from its nursery pot and plant at a similar level in its new container.
  • Position in full sun, in fact the more sun, the better! A south-facing wall, patio or balcony is ideal.
  • If soil conditions are heavy, be sure to add grit or sand to the mix to boost drainage.

Aftercare and Ongoing Maintenance:

  • Keep slightly dry - Bougainvillea prefer moderate watering. Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry before watering again. Avoid overwatering as too much water can lead to root rot and the production of fewer flowers.
  • From spring to late summer, feed with a high-nitrogen fertiliser weekly to encourage strong growth.
  • Once the bracts start to develop colour, switch to a high-potash feed, such as tomato fertiliser, to boost flowering.

Pruning Advice:

  • Trim lightly in early spring to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth.
  • Remove dead or damaged branches as needed.
  • Be mindful of thorns when pruning or handling.
  • From October to April, move your potted Bougainvillea to a conservatory, greenhouse or bright indoor spot, ideally above 5C.
  • Reduce watering and avoid feeding during the dormant period.
