Description

Westringia fruticosa is a wonderfully versatile evergreen shrub that brings structure and colour to the garden throughout the year. Known as Coastal Rosemary or Australian Rosemary, it forms a naturally tidy plant with narrow green leaves that reveal attractive silvery undersides when stirred by the breeze.

Fresh shoots appear in soft silvery green. From late spring onwards, delicate tubular flowers begin to appear. These soft white to pale blue blooms are lightly freckled in the throat and continue to appear through summer and often into early autumn.

Pollinating insects visit the flowers regularly, making this shrub both attractive and wildlife friendly.

Westringia fruticosa performs exceptionally well in exposed coastal gardens where wind and salty air can challenge many other plants. This reliability has earned it the RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Growing to around 1.5 metres tall, it creates a rounded evergreen shrub that works beautifully in borders or as a low informal hedge. It can also be grown in containers to add structure and long lasting foliage interest to patios and terraces.

Supplied as an established plant in an 18cm pot, ready to plant.

Top Tips
Westringia is frost tender and benefits from protection during cold winters. In milder coastal areas it can remain outdoors in a sheltered position. In colder parts of the UK, container plants should be moved to a frost free greenhouse, porch or conservatory during winter. Plants growing in the ground can be protected with horticultural fleece during cold snaps.
Care Information
  • Unpack the plant straight away and give it a good check over. Water the compost if it feels dry, as plants can sometimes dry slightly during transit. Place the plant somewhere bright and sheltered while you prepare its planting position. If frost is forecast, keep it in a protected spot such as a porch, greenhouse or conservatory until conditions improve.

How To Plant

  • Choose a sunny, sheltered position with very well drained soil.
  • Westringia dislikes sitting in cold, wet ground during winter, so good drainage is essential. If planting in the ground, dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and mix in some horticultural grit or coarse sand if your soil is heavy.
  • Gently remove the plant from its pot, place it at the same depth it was growing, then backfill and firm lightly. Water well to settle the soil around the roots.
  • This shrub also grows very well in large patio containers. Use a good quality multipurpose compost mixed with a little grit to improve drainage.
