Description

Transform your garden into a hub of flavour and beauty with grow-your-own chives, a hardy perennial that’s as practical as it is attractive.

Chives are a culinary favourite, with their delicate, onion-flavoured leaves adding a subtle kick to soups, salads, egg dishes, and more. The edible purple flowers are not only stunning but also provide a peppery burst of flavour, making them perfect for garnishing and decorating your dishes.

This resilient herb thrives in various settings, from garden beds and borders to pots on your patio or kitchen windowsill. Its clump-forming habit and vibrant greenery make it a striking addition to your outdoor space, while its ease of care means it’s suitable for gardeners of all levels.

What sets chives apart is their ability to attract bees and butterflies, supporting a thriving garden ecosystem. By planting chives, you’re not just growing a delicious herb - you’re also contributing to the health and vitality of your garden.

Top Tips
  • Begin harvesting once the plants are well established, typically 4-6 weeks after planting.
  • Use sharp scissors to snip leaves, starting from the outer edges of the plant.
  • Leave at least 5cm of growth at the base to allow the plant to regrow.
  • Avoid harvesting more than one-third of the plant at once to ensure it remains productive.
Care Information
  • Plant chives in spring or early summer after the last frost has passed.
  • Chives thrive in full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
  • Choose moist, well-drained soil enriched with compost or organic matter.
  • Loosen the soil and remove weeds. Mix in well-rotted compost to enrich the area.
  • Space plug plants 15-20cm apart to allow room for growth.
  • Dig a hole slightly larger than the plug, place the plant inside, and gently firm the soil around it.
  • Water thoroughly immediately after planting to help the roots establish.

Growing in containers:

  • Use a pot at least 20cm in diameter or group several plants in a larger container.
  • Fill with multi-purpose compost mixed with grit for improved drainage.
  • Position the plugs, leaving space between each plant, and water well.

Caring:

  • Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Adjust frequency during hot, dry spells.
  • Feed every 4-6 weeks with a balanced liquid fertiliser to promote healthy growth.
  • Trim back flower stems once they finish blooming to encourage new leaf growth. Remove any yellowing or damaged leaves to maintain plant health.
  • Divide clumps every 2-3 years in spring to prevent overcrowding and encourage fresh growth. Simply lift the plant, split the clump into smaller sections, and replant.
