Description

Transform your herb garden with the unmistakable aroma and flavour of oregano. This Mediterranean gem is a must-have for any gardener or foodie, offering aromatic leaves and delicate blooms that are as beautiful as they are functional.

Once established, oregano is highly drought-tolerant, requiring little watering or fuss, which is great for busy gardeners or those looking for a low-maintenance addition to their garden. Plus, as a perennial, you’ll enjoy fresh oregano leaves year after year, and its compact growth makes it perfect for smaller spaces.

In the kitchen, oregano is a culinary hero, with a robust, slightly peppery taste that pairs beautifully with Italian and Mediterranean dishes. Use it fresh or dried to enhance pizzas, pastas, grilled vegetables, or meats.

This herb is also a fantastic companion for a wildlife-friendly garden. Its flowers attract pollinators like bees and butterflies, making it as eco-friendly as it is delicious.

Enjoy free delivery on these plug plants! Please note: If you add other items to your order then this may include a postage surcharge.

Supplied as a set of six plug plants, ready to grow on and plant out, once all risk of frost has passed.

Top Tips
Oregano is hardy in most parts of the UK. In colder regions, apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plants in autumn to protect roots from frost.
Care Information
  • Oregano thrives in full sun. Choose a spot with at least 6 - 8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Use well-drained soil, as oregano prefers dry conditions and doesn’t tolerate waterlogged soil. A slightly alkaline to neutral pH is ideal.
  • Enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted manure before planting, but avoid over-fertilising, as this can dilute the aromatic oils that give oregano its flavour.
  • Improve drainage for heavy soils by mixing in sand or grit.
  • Space plants 20 - 30cm apart to allow room for their bushy growth.
  • Plant plugs so the root ball is just below the soil surface, ensuring the crown (where the stems meet the roots) is level with the soil.
  • Gently firm the soil around the plug and water thoroughly after planting.
  • Choose a container with good drainage and a depth of at least 20cm. Use a well-draining potting mix and plant plugs at the same spacing.

Caring:

  • Oregano is drought-tolerant once established. Water moderately, allowing the soil to dry out between watering sessions. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot and doesn’t require heavy feeding. Use a general-purpose fertiliser sparingly once every 4 - 6 weeks during the growing season.
  • Avoid high-nitrogen fertilisers, which can promote leafy growth at the expense of flavour.
  • Pinch out the tips of young plants to encourage bushier growth.
  • Trim back the plant by about one-third in late summer to encourage fresh growth and prevent it from becoming too woody.
  • Apply a thin layer of mulch around the plants to suppress weeds and retain soil moisture.
  • For container-grown oregano, move pots to a sheltered location or greenhouse during severe winters.

Harvesting:

  • Begin harvesting leaves once the plant is well-established, typically 6 - 8 weeks after planting.
  • Harvest young leaves for the best flavour before the plant flowers.
  • Use scissors or your fingers to pinch off individual leaves or snip sprigs just above a leaf node to encourage regrowth.
  • For a larger harvest, cut stems back by about half, leaving enough foliage for the plant to recover and continue growing.
