Description

There is something especially striking about a Dendrobium when its upright canes become lined with crisp white flowers. Dendrobium nobile White produces multiple exotic blooms that remain attractive for weeks.

This reassuringly manageable orchid thrives on a bright windowsill or light conservatory, which both give it the conditions it enjoys, while sparing watering during flowering is all that is needed. The strong cane-like stems and fleshy green leaves also remain decorative once the flowers have finished.

To help encourage future flowering, remove faded blooms but keep the main canes. After flowering, move the plant to a cooler position and reduce watering considerably while it rests. When new buds and growth begin to develop, increase watering again and introduce feed.

Dendrobiums also prefer not to be over-potted. Their roots perform well when slightly restricted, which means there is no need to immediately move this plant into a larger container. It can remain in its supplied pot for a year or more.

Supplied as an established plant in a 12cm pot, ready to display indoors.

Care Information

Feeding Advice for Dendrobium nobile Orchids:

  • Too much nitrogen will inhibit blooms, so use fertilizers with a low percentage of nitrogen and stop application of any fertiliser in the first part of August.

Pruning Advice for Dendrobium nobile Orchids:

  • The small flower stems will fall with the flowers, and the main stems (pseudobulbs) should not be cut.

Watering Advice for Dendrobium nobile Orchids:

  • When temperatures begin to rise in the spring, gradually start watering your orchid, using rainwater or distilled water.
  • In the summer, water almost every day to keep the plant from drying out, although allow it to drain - roots dislike sitting in water.
  • When temperatures begin to fall in September, gradually reduce watering. When night temperature falls below 50 F (10C), water only enough to keep the canes from shriveling - around once a week.
  • When night temperatures fall below (5C), keep the plants dry.
