Description

Transform your garden with a Californian Lilac Standard, a low-maintenance architectural tree offering spectacular colour, wonderful fragrance and year-round appeal.

Perfect for patios, entranceways and borders, this eye-catching standard tree makes an impressive feature wherever it is planted.

From April to June, clouds of blue, purple and white flowers cover the rounded crown, filling the garden with vibrant colour and a lovely fragrance.

Carefully trained into a neat lollipop shape, it creates instant height and structure, while the scented blooms attract bees and butterflies.

Evergreen foliage provides lasting interest beyond the flowering season. Drought tolerant and winter hardy to around -8C, it is wonderfully easy to care for, needing only a light annual trim to maintain its shape.

Top Tips
  • Remove faded blooms to keep your Californian Lilac Tree tidy.
  • Cut back new growth to healthy leaf sets while it is actively growing to control the shrub's size. Do not cut branches that are more than 1 inch in diameter.
Care Information
  • To keep your Ceanothus looking at its best, remove any side shoots (laterals) from the trunk of the young tree in the winter. Any weak or competing shoots can also be removed from the top of the tree if needed.
  • By keeping your Californian Lilac in its pot, you can limit its size and keep it manageable. Spring is the best time to repot a potted ceanothus.
  • Repot your standard tree every other year. Use the same pot if you want to keep it at its current size, or up to 5cm bigger is you would like to grow it on a bit more.
  • Remove your Californian Lilac from its pot and trim off any rotten roots or roots that are winding around the outside of the root ball.
  • Cut away the bottom one-third of the root ball using a pruning saw and replant using fresh potting soil or compost.
