Description

Discover how quickly a spring garden can spring into life with Aubrieta 'Katie' Mix. Compact, evergreen mounds that burst into flower from March to May, creating a bright, cheerful carpet of colour when the garden needs it most.

Aubrieta 'Katie' Mix produces big blooms for this type of plant, with masses of flowers covering the foliage in vivid shades of purple, violet and red. The effect is bold, uplifting and useful, especially in smaller spaces.

This mix sits low, spreads gently, softens hard edges, brightens the front of borders and looks superb spilling over stone, brick, pots and baskets. Use it in rockeries, along paths, in raised beds, around spring bulbs, or anywhere that needs an easy splash of early-season colour.

Better still, this is not a one-season wonder, as they are hardy, evergreen perennial plants. Their dense, spreading foliage helps cover bare soil and can reduce space for unwanted weeds, while the early flowers offer a valuable nectar source for bees and other pollinators.

Top Tips
Deadhead any faded flowers for an abudance of blooms.
Care Information

Planting Advice:

  • Unpack plugs immediately and stand them in water for an hour.
  • If you can’t do this, they can sit in their mini greenhouse for a week if upright and not too wet.
  • Plugs may be slightly dry or yellow after being in a dark box in the post, but they’ll quickly recover.
  • Put them somewhere warm, light and airy such as a windowsill or greenhouse.
  • When potting on, handle plugs carefully. Pot on using our 9cm pots in Shuttle Trays, using good multi-purpose compost.
  • Alternatively plant straight into baskets and grow on for a week or two before hanging up.
  • Give your plants a good water initially, then only when the top compost starts to dry. They don’t like to be left in standing water.
  • Plant approx. 20cm apart to allow them room to grow.
  • Feed using a high-potash feed such as Blooming Fast Superior Soluble Fertiliser for Flowers & Fruits, to encourage flowering.

Aftercare Advice:

  • Keep well watered.

Pruning and Trimming Advice:

  • To keep a compact shape, cut back after flowering.
  • If the plant has become straggly or overgrown, give it a hard prune, cutting right back.
