Description

Beautifully elegant evergreen shrub, with year round structure, fragrance and seasonal interest. With its glossy dark green foliage, abundant summer flowers and decorative autumn berries - for Mediterranean character across the garden.

The leaves are neat and aromatic, remaining on the plant throughout the year, forming a naturally dense and tidy shrub that looks superb in borders, containers or as an informal low hedge. Gently brush the foliage to release a wonderfully fresh, herbal fragrance.

From the middle of summer, Myrtus communis produces masses of white flowers, each with a soft star-like appearance and a halo of fine stamens that give them a light, airy look. These blooms also attract pollinators to your garden.

As the flowers fade, attractive purplish black berries follow, extending the ornamental display well into autumn and adding further seasonal interest. This combination of evergreen foliage, summer flowers and autumn berries ensures the plant remains a valuable feature in the garden for much of the year.

Awarded the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, this dependable shrub is easy to grow and highly versatile.

Top Tips
Trim lightly after flowering if you want to keep a neat shape or to encourage bushier growth. Avoid hard pruning into old wood. Remove any damaged or wayward stems as needed.
Care Information

On Arrival:

  • When your Myrtle arrives, carefully unpack it straight away and remove any packaging. If the compost feels dry, give it a light water and let any excess drain away. Keep the plant in a bright, sheltered spot outdoors while you prepare its final position.
  • If you can’t plant immediately, it will be quite happy in its pot for a week or two as long as it's kept watered and frost-free.

Where to Plant:

  • Choose a sunny, sheltered site - ideally one that's protected from cold winds and severe frosts.
  • Myrtle thrives in well-drained soil and loves warmth, so it's particularly at home near a south-facing wall or patio. It can also be grown in a large container using a high-quality compost mixed with a little grit added for extra drainage.

How to Plant:

  • Dig a hole roughly twice as wide and just as deep as the pot.
  • Loosen the soil at the base and mix in some well-rotted compost or organic matter.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and gently tease out any circling roots.
  • Place it in the hole at the same depth it was growing in the pot.
  • Backfill with soil, firm gently and water thoroughly.
  • Water well after planting.

Ongoing Care:

  • Keep the compost evenly moist while the plant is establishing. Once settled, Myrtle is fairly drought-tolerant but will benefit from watering during prolonged dry spells or when grown in pots. Avoid leaving it sitting in water.
  • Myrtle is fully hardy in most of the UK once established, but young plants appreciate protection from harsh frost. If you live in a colder region, grow it in a pot so you can move it into a frost-free greenhouse, porch, or conservatory during severe cold. Mulching around the base in autumn helps insulate roots.
