Description
Athyrium niponicum 'Pewter Lace' thrives in those awkward shaded spots where colour can feel hard to achieve. This hardy Japanese Painted Fern boasts metallic pewter fronds, blue-green shading and burgundy-purple midribs that look almost hand-painted.
This is a superb choice for north-facing borders, woodland-style planting, damp corners, under trees, beside walls and shaded patio pots. It forms a graceful mound of finely divided, arching fronds, typically reaching around 50cm high, creating elegant groundcover without looking heavy.
Despite its delicate looks, 'Pewter Lace' is a tough, low-maintenance fern. Plant it in partial to full shade, in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, and it will return reliably each spring after dying back in winter.

All ferns love a good pampering in the first two years to get them established - lots of water and humous.
Care Information
- Prepare the soil deeply before you plant your fern, removing all weeds and adding plenty of well-rotted organic matter such as leaves mold or composted bark.
- Ferns need both moisture and good drainage, so a good, rich mulch helps considerably.
- Plant your fern shallowly, with the crown flush with the surrounding soil and keep garden debris away from the base.
- In spring, apply a new layer of mulch for the new growing year.

We send most of our orders via a fully tracked courier service with Yodel. We will send you a tracking link as soon as your order has been dispatched. To avoid perishable items being stuck at depots and deteriorating, we will not require a signature on delivery, and we ask out couriers to leave your item in a safe place ad your delivery address.
