Description

Remarkable new Mock Orange for an incredible fragrance! Philadelphus 'Pearls of Perfume' is a compact, repeat-flowering shrub with big, double white blooms that repeat flower through the warmest months of the year, filling your garden with a rich summer fragrance.

Shortlisted for RHS Chelsea Plant of the Year 2023, this variety flowers on both old and new growth, so displays begin in late spring and carry on through July and August. Plus, the flowers are borne along the length of the stems, cloaking the branches in pure white blooms.

Its neat, upright habit makes it especially useful for modern gardens. Reaching around 1.2m tall, it fits comfortably into smaller borders, courtyard gardens or even patio containers. Fully hardy and easy to look after, it needs very little beyond a sunny or lightly shaded spot and a light trim after flowering to keep it looking smart.

Top Tips
Prune once flowering comes to an end, removing one in four stems down to ground level. This will allow space for fresh growth in the new year.
Care Information
  • Philadelphus thrives in full sun or partial shade. A sunny position will encourage the best flowering, but it will still perform well in light shade.
  • This shrub prefers moist, well-drained soil but is adaptable to most garden conditions, including clay, loam, or sandy soil. Enrich poor soil with organic matter, like compost or well-rotted manure.
  • Make a hole twice as wide as the root ball to allow the roots room to establish.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and gently tease out some of the roots. Place it in the hole so that the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil.
  • Fill the hole with soil, firming gently around the base to remove air pockets. Water thoroughly to help settle the soil.
  • Apply a 2-3cm layer of mulch (such as bark or compost) around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Ongoing Care:

  • Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, especially during the first year while it establishes in your garden.
  • Once mature, it is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional watering in dry spells.
  • Apply a general-purpose slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth and abundant blooms.
  • This fully hardy shrub requires no winter protection and will bounce back each year with a flush of new foliage and flowers.
  • Ideal for borders, cottage gardens, wildlife-friendly spaces, and patio containers, where its gorgeous scent can be fully appreciated.
