Description

Edgeworthia chrysantha Grandiflora, commonly known as Paperbush, is a winter flowering shrub that brings colour, fragrance and interest when gardens need it most. Flowering in late winter and early spring, it produces rounded clusters of creamy yellow tubular blooms on bare stems, creating a striking and elegant display.

The fragrance is soft and spicy rather than overpowering, making it ideal for planting near paths, entrances or patios where it can be enjoyed on colder days. Once flowering finishes, fresh foliage appears, carrying the plant neatly into the growing season.

This Paperbush suits sheltered gardens and lightly shaded areas, helping to fill spaces that are often tricky to plant. It prefers humus rich, moisture retentive soil and rewards good placement with dependable performance year after year. Over time, it develops into a compact deciduous shrub that brings real structure and seasonal interest.

This is a plant for gardeners who appreciate something a little out of the ordinary. Still rarely seen, it offers distinction without fuss and delivers winter value that few shrubs can match.

Top Tips
  • Little maintenance is needed, only light pruning to remove diseased, damaged or crossing shoots in late winter or early spring.
  • After pruning apply a layer of mulch around the base and feed with a general purpose fertiliser.
Care Information
  • Dig a hole twice the width of the rootball. Sprinkle in a handful of blood, fish and bone and work into the ground.
  • Place the plant into the hole, back-filling so that it is at the same depth as was in the pot. Fill around the root ball and firm the soil down gently but firmly. Water well.
