Description

Bring rich, velvety colour to your patios and borders with the latest patio dahlia, 'Velvet Crush'! This impressive new introduction has already caught attention, winning the BBC Gardeners' World Live 'Best New Plant' for 2025.

Its flowers show a beautiful blend of plum and soft pink, and the dark bronze foliage gives a strong contrast that lifts the whole plant. Each bloom measures up to 10cm across, for a lush, full display.

This compact variety stays neatly shaped, so it suits containers, small beds and tighter spaces where taller dahlias may overwhelm. The flowering season is long and reliable, beginning in June and running well into autumn, offering colour long after many summer bedding plants tire.

One of its strongest qualities is its mildew-resistant character. It keeps its foliage clean and attractive through the season, even in warm, humid spells. The plant branches well, holds itself upright and continues producing new flowers for months, giving a premium look without any complication.

Top Tips
If you find that earwigs are a problem, the organic way to control them is to position pots filled with straw upside down on canes spaced around your dahlias.
Care Information
  • Dahlias perform best when potted up initially in March or early April, into large pots (2 - 3L) filled with multi-purpose compost.
  • Place in a light, frost-free place and keep moist, they'll quickly form bushy plants by the time the frosts have ended, ready to be planted out into the garden.
  • In the garden, dig a hole at least 30cm wide x 30cm deep for each one, spacing each plant 75cm apart.
  • If you don’t have anywhere to start them in pots, you can place straight into the ground when the frosts are nearly over.
  • Once a fortnight, feed them a liquid feed such as our Blooming Fast Superior plant feed.
  • During dry periods, water at least once a week.
  • Dahlias should be deadheaded regularly to encourage more blooms and you will need to stake the plants to prevent the flowers from breaking the stems.
