Description

Give your pots, patios and sheltered borders a bold splash of foliage colour with Coprosma 'Northern Lights'. This colourful evergreen shrub boasts glossy, wavy leaves that change through the seasons, bringing much-needed interest across the year.

During summer, the foliage shows fresh green variegation with a bright, lively look. As colder weather arrives, the leaves deepen into rich red tones, creating a striking winter display when many other plants have faded into the background.

Its compact habit makes it especially useful for patio pots, entrances, balconies and smaller gardens. The polished foliage looks smart on its own, but also combines beautifully with grasses, heuchera, phormium, cordyline and seasonal bedding for a fuller, more designed effect.

'Northern Lights' is tolerant down to at least -7C, although it still appreciates a sheltered position in colder locations. Plant in free-draining soil or compost, avoid waterlogging and protect from the worst winter weather where needed.

Top Tips
  • Be sure to water well through the first year to help the roots to establish.
Care Information
  • Dig a planting hole three times the width of the roots you're planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill once the shrub is in place.
  • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting, soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow them to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots. Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help quicker establishment.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level as it was supplied in the nursery pot and refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc.
  • If you're planting into pots, place some old rocks, stones or gravel in the bottom of the pot for drainage and ballast and use the best compost you can buy and some sand or grit for drainage.
