Description

New! An easy to grow, tolerant and hardy flowering shrub with fascinating changing foliage colour, early spring flowers, and excellent pollinator appeal.

In early spring, before leaves appear, the branches are smothered in rich pink flowers that glow against bare wood. As the year moves on, dramatic heart-shaped foliage unfurls in deep red tones, softening to green through summer before finishing with warm autumn shades of bronze, orange and purple.

What makes 'Merlot' so appealing is its strength as well as its beauty. It is fully hardy, copes well with dry spells and heat, and settles quickly once planted. This is a plant that performs without demanding constant care. Bees and other pollinators flock to the spring flowers, adding life and movement to the garden at a crucial time of year.

Over many years it forms a graceful, compact tree or large shrub, reaching around four metres in height and spread. It works brilliantly as a specimen plant, bringing colour, shape and seasonal change that few trees can match.

Top Tips
Cercis can be left to grow naturally, or pruned to control its size and shape.
Care Information
  • Dig a square hole as deep as the roots and approximately 1.5x as wide.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the planting hole to help the plant establish quicker.
  • Spread the roots gently and place into the planting hole.
  • Mix well rotted compost or manure with the soil taken from the hole and then use to backfill around the tree.
  • Keep well-watered until established.
  • No routine pruning is necessary apart from removing any twisted, damaged or dead branches in early spring.
