Description

Put that sunny, sheltered corner to work with a clematis that offers greenery all year and flowers through winter. 'Winter Beauty' brings height and interest to a border or large container, with rich foliage that keeps its appeal long after the blooms have finished.

An obelisk, climbing frame or supporting wires give the stems somewhere to climb. Reaching up to 4m tall as it matures, this evergreen clematis offers plenty of scope for creating a leafy feature above the surrounding planting.

Winter brings its prettiest detail. Pale green buds unfold into creamy-white flowers, each shaped like a little hanging bell. Their waxy petals curl gently outwards at the tips, standing out against the glossy, dark green leaves. A delicate fragrance adds to the pleasure, so choose a position where the flowers can be enjoyed at close quarters.

Give it sunshine, shelter and soil that drains freely. It performs most happily outdoors in milder UK gardens, while colder areas call for winter protection. Growing it in a container also allows it to be moved into a greenhouse or conservatory during winter.

Pruning is straightforward, with no need for a complicated annual routine. Simply tidy after flowering if necessary, then enjoy the foliage while waiting for the next winter display.

Important: Skin irritant. Wear gloves when handling. Harmful to pets if eaten.

Top Tips
  • Plant with the crown of the plant 5-8cm deep to encourage new shoots to grow from below ground level. Clematis like a cool ‘root run’ so try and plant so that the roots are shaded. If you are planting in a sunny position, place some pieces of slate or flat stones on the soil after planting or use groundcover plants to keep the roots cool.
Care Information
  • Feed in spring with a general-purpose feed, avoiding the stems. Mulch immediately afterwards with organic matter such as well-rotted manure, leafmould or garden compost.
  • Water regularly during periods of dry weather in the first few seasons after planting, especially for container plants.
  • Clematis in pots should be given a liquid feed through the summer and early autumn.
  • ‘Winter Beauty’ flowers on the previous season’s growth and although no routine pruning is required, any pruning should be carried out in spring or summer after flowering has finished, so that it can grow new shoots that will carry next season’s flowers.
  • We recommend cutting your clematis back to 30 cm (1 ft) the first spring after planting to encourage multiple stems which can then be tied it to create the framework for future growth.
