Description

A compact fig tree that punches well above its weight. Ficus 'Little Miss Figgy' is a fruiting powerhouse that makes growing your own figs surprisingly easy, even if you've only got a balcony or patio to play with. You can enjoy the rich, velvety sweetness of homegrown figs without needing a Mediterranean orchard.

It only reaches around 1.8m tall in maturity, so is ideal for containers. With its lush, deeply lobed foliage and architectural shape, it adds style as well as substance.

You could be harvesting delicious, deep purple figs twice a year in warmer seasons, with a main crop in autumn, and a bonus one in spring in warmer years. These figs are rich, sweet and packed with flavour, ideal for eating straight from the tree or serving up with cheeses, in tarts, or with a drizzle of honey for an indulgent treat.

Plus, it's easy to grow too, tolerating temperatures down to around -10C and tolerating drought once established. Just plant it in a sunny, sheltered, free-draining spot, and give it the occasional prune to keep its shape neat.

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready to plant.

Top Tips
If you're planting in spring or summer, water well and regularly for the first few months.
Care Information

Planting Advice for 'Little Miss Figgy'

  • Pot-grown shrubs can be planted at any time of the year as long as the soil is not waterlogged or frozen.
  • Plant in a large container filled with good quality, soil-based compost.
  • Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place at the same level at the pot.

Pruning Advice for 'Little Miss Figgy'

Prune to keep its shape and size. When pruning, aim for a balanced top that allows light into the centre of the canopy.

  • Prune twice a year:
Early spring: remove any branches that spoil the shape, or any that are crossing or damaged, along with any suckers appearing from the ground or lower stem. If needed cut back one or two branches that have become too long and bare to a 5cm (2in) stub to stimulate new growth from the base of the branch.
Early summer: pinch out the new growth at five or six leaves. Do not prune later growth.
