Introducing Brussel 'Hector', the new and compact vegetable for home gardeners looking to grow big on taste and small on space. This exceptional variety is celebrated for its sweet, nutty flavour that intensifies after a touch of frost. Its naturally compact size makes it perfect for small gardens or container growing, so even if space is limited, you can enjoy fresh, home-grown sprouts straight from your garden.

This resilient variety produces tightly packed sprouts on sturdy, upright stems reaching around 75cm tall. You’ll love how easy it is to care for, as it thrives in well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and performs beautifully in full sun or light shade.

Not only is ‘Hector’ a garden workhorse, but it’s also a visual delight with its upright form and glossy green leaves. Pollinator-friendly and disease-resistant, making it a top choice for gardeners seeking reliability and flavour from one delightful plant.

Enjoy free delivery on these plug plants! Please note: If you add other items to your order then this may include a postage surcharge.

Supplied as a set of 12 plug plants, ready to grow on and plant out.

Top Tips
  • After harvesting all sprouts, the top leaves of the plant (known as 'sprout tops') can also be eaten, providing a delicious, leafy green.
  • Care Information
    • Brussel sprouts thrive in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Ensure your planting area receives at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.
    • Use well-drained, fertile soil with a pH of 6.5–7.5. Enrich the soil with plenty of organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, a few weeks before planting.
    • Add a general-purpose fertiliser high in nitrogen (e.g., fish, blood, and bone) to encourage healthy leaf and sprout development.
    • Plant plug plants outside from late spring to early summer after the last frost, spacing each 60cm apart in rows, with 75cm between rows.
    • For container gardening, choose a pot at least 30cm wide and deep per plant
    • Ensure the plug plant is set at the same depth it was growing in its original container. Firm the soil gently around the base to support the plant.
    • Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry spells. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely, as this can affect sprout formation.
    • Apply a layer of organic mulch (e.g., straw or bark chips) around the plants to retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds.

    Caring:

    • Apply a high-nitrogen fertiliser every 4 - 6 weeks during the growing season to promote strong growth.
    • Avoid overfeeding late in the season to prevent overly leafy plants.
    • Tall plants may need staking to prevent them from toppling in strong winds.
    • Mound soil around the base of the stem to provide additional stability.

    Harvesting:

    • Sprouts will be ready from late autumn through winter. Harvest from the bottom of the stalk upwards as they mature.
