Get an instant cottage-garden look with this winter-hardy Lavender 'Hidcote'! Ideal for a low border and packed with heady scent.

Lavender 'Hidcote' is the classic hardy English perennial, and this much-loved cottage-garden favourite will transform your garden with colour, incredible fragrance and reliable flower power! It can be seen in some of the smartest gardens across the country.

Awarded the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit, this compact variety is ideal for edging paths, creating a fragrant hedge or adding structure to a garden border, where its magnificent scent can be enjoyed. It is also an excellent choice for attracting pollinators.

Incredibly easy to grow, very hardy and drought tolerant, this lavender can also be clipped for fragrant indoor arrangements or homemade potpourri.

Growing up to 60cm tall, a hedge of traditional English lavender can be used in many different ways. Plant it around beds, borders or paths, use it to divide areas of your garden, or create an eye-catching parterre or knot garden. Space plants 30cm apart.

Once established, a lavender hedge is extremely drought tolerant. Keep it in great shape by pruning twice a year. Trim lightly in mid to late summer, removing the spent flower heads, then prune again in early spring, removing around 2.5cm of growth. You can even cut the stems for fragrant indoor dried displays!

Supplied as a set of 10 garden ready plants, ready to plant.

Top Tips
In late summer, clip the plants back lightly after the flowers have faded to encourage more growth - cut the stems back by a few inches, but not so far that the stems are bare of live foliage, and plants will then have time to produce new shoots before winter dormancy.
Care Information
  • This drought-tolerant plant thrives in a sunny border, container, herb or gravel gardens.
  • Lavender can be planted at any time of the year, as long as soil conditions are not frozen or waterlogged, but for best results plant between April and May when the soil is starting to warm up.
  • Lavender thrives in most free-draining soils in full sun. Heavier soils should have some grit added to improve drainage and to open them up.
  • Space plants 90cm apart, or if growing a hedge, 30cm apart or, 45cm for larger cultivars.
  • Lavender can be grown in large pots, 30-40cm diameter, using a multipurpose or loam-based compost such as JI No 3, with some extra coarse grit, roughly a third, to improve drainage, along with some controlled release fertiliser granules.
