MORE INFORMATION

Hawthorn are beautiful flowering hedges that bring much fascination to the garden, including sharp thorns, green leaves, white blossom, and red fruits.

Commonly known as Quickthorn or Mayflower, these hardy and deciduous hedges look impressive from spring with green leaves and clusters of dainty white flowers that release a floral aroma to delight the senses, without overwhelming other natural perfumes.

The thorny branches and dense nature of these hedges create a near-impenetrable barrier, perfect for edging the garden to soften noise or wind. When autumn rolls around, the white flowers develop into dark red berries, called ‘haws’.

A welcome boost to garden wildlife, the red fruits will draw the attention of birds in autumn, while the foliage offers an excellent nesting space and ample shelter for our feathered friends. More than 100 types of insects, including butterflies and buzzing bees, can be seen benefitting from this hedge during the springtime.

These hedges are quick to grow, at a rate of 40-60cm per year, and will happily thrive in most soil types and garden locations, saving intensely wet or fully shaded conditions. This variety will even stand tall in particularly windy or coastal locations.

Supplied as 10 bare root hedges, 60-90cm tall, ready for planting.

CARE INFORMATION

Top Tips

For best performance, plant bare root hedges in the winter.

Care Guide

On Arrival:

  • When your bare root hedges arrive, be sure to place them upright in a bucket of clean water as soon as possible for a minimum of two hours.
  • Only remove the plants from the water when you go to plant them, to ensure the roots are wet when planted and avoiding the chance of them drying out.
  • If you are not ready to immediately plant your bare roots when they arrive, they can be stored in a sheltered space, such as a shed, for up to a week. Just be sure to open the package they arrive in and keep the roots moist.

Planting:

  • Where possible, plant in well-drained, good-quality soil in a sunny or partially shaded space in the garden for best performance.
  • Trim the roots slightly before planting, as this will encourage healthier growth.
  • Dig a trenched hole in the ground in the shape of a ‘V’, deep enough for the bare root to sit comfortably so the ‘tide mark’ of the root is level with the ground. This marks the level where the bare root was previously planted before lifting for delivery.
  • Ensure the roots are completely covered in soil, then firm the soil around, as water will gather in any remaining air pockets and potentially damage the roots when it freezes.
  • Water immediately after planting, then again whenever there are three or more days of continuous dry weather.
  • Where the weather is hot, daily watering may be needed throughout the first year of growth.
  • For an impressive display when planting multiple hedges, place five per metre. For a thicker hedge, plant seven per metre.
