Description

A tried-and-tested classic that never fails to impress, this Hydrangea 'Blue Mophead' standard boasts top notch shape and colour.

Great big blooms, each up to 20cm across, flower prolifically across many months of summer, starting as pale green buds before turning rich, true hydrangea blue. Acidic soil conditions promote the very best blue shade, so use ericaceous compost when growing in pots.

The blooms come in midsummer and just keep going, right through until autumn gets chilly.

Supplied here trained in a neat lollipop shape, with a strong stem topped by a rounded head of lush green leaves and brilliant blooms. Perfect for flanking doorways, standing proud on patios, or giving structure and height to a mixed border.

Plus, it's fully hardy, so can be left outside throughout the year.

Supplied as an established standard plant in an 18cm pot, already approximately 80-100cm tall, ready to plant.

Top Tips

Hydrangeas love to be kept well watered, and will produce bigger, glossier, more substantial leaves when provided with regular moisture.

Try to use rainwater to water hydrangeas, since mains hard water can affect the flower colour, turning blue flowers mauve or pink.

Hydrangeas tend to be blue in acid soil conditions, mauve in acid to neutral soil conditions, and pink in alkaline conditions. Cultivars with blue flowers can be kept blue by growing the plants in acidic soil (pH 4.5-5), or by acidifying soils. Hydrangea colourants can also be used according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Care Information
  • This plant is at its best in most soil as long as it is well drained, in sun or partial shade. The more sun the plant gets, the better the flower colour.
  • A moisture-loving plant, remember to water regularly and deeply.
  • Hardy in the UK, frost can cause a lot of damage to young buds, reducing the number of flowers, so it’s advisable to protect your plant with fleece if freezing weather is likely.
  • Pruning is generally best carried out early spring. A general tidy up is usually all that is needed and consists of removing the dead bloom from each stem, cutting back to the first strong, healthy pair of buds down from the faded flower.
  • As Hydrangeas flower on the previous year's growth, cut out 1 or 2 of the oldest stems, in spring, at the base to encourage the production of new, replacement growth that will carry more flowers.
