Description

Fascinating ornamental garden shrubs, Sorbaria 'Crimson Feathers' will make you stop and stare. Finely cut, feathery foliage erupts in early spring, with a fiery display of scarlet red, a jaw-dropping show that demands attention.

The extraordinary leaves soften to golden green as the season continues, shimmering in the sun and adding movement and texture to the garden.

These compact, hardy shrubs are perfect for reliable garden success without the fuss. You don't need to be an expert or have hours to spare, as these are low-maintenance and hardy. Whether you grow them in pots on the patio, as bold border accents, or even in natural-style low hedges, the effect is striking.

If you're after something unusual, dramatic, yet utterly dependable, Sorbaria 'Crimson Feathers' is the one. An astonishing addition to modern gardens and a surprising twist on traditional shrubs.

Supplied as a set of three established plants in 9cm pots, ready to plant.

Top Tips
For the best colour contrast, plant against a dark background or near green-leaved shrubs to let its fiery tones stand out even more.
Care Information

On Arrival:

As soon as your Sorbaria 'Crimson Feather' arrives, unpack it carefully and check that the compost is slightly moist. If it's dry to the touch, give it a gentle water. Stand the pot in a sheltered, bright spot outdoors, away from strong wind or hot midday sun, until you're ready to plant. Ideally plant within a few days of receipt.

How to Plant:

  • Choose a sunny or lightly shaded position in the garden, in any well-drained soil. Sorbaria are not fussy shrubs and will tolerate a range of soil types, including clay, as long as it's not waterlogged.
  • Dig a hole slightly wider than the pot.
  • Loosen the soil at the base and sides.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and gently tease out the roots if tightly bound.
  • Place it in the hole so it sits at the same depth as in the pot.
  • Backfill with soil, firming in gently as you go.
  • Water well after planting.
  • Alternatively, plant in a large pot using a quality multi-purpose compost with added grit or perlite for drainage.

Ongoing Care:

  • Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, Sorbaria is relatively drought-tolerant, but watering during long dry spells will keep foliage looking its best, especially in containers.
  • Apply a balanced slow-release fertiliser in spring, or feed monthly from April to August with a general-purpose liquid feed to support strong, colourful growth.
  • Very little pruning is needed. In late winter or early spring, cut back any old or congested stems to the base to rejuvenate the plant and encourage fresh, vibrant foliage. Trim back any suckering growth at the base if you want to keep it compact.
  • Fully hardy in the UK, Sorbaria 'Crimson Feather' needs no protection in winter. The foliage will naturally die back in autumn, returning fresh in spring.
