Description

Looking to bring timeless elegance to your garden? These exceptional evergreen hedge plants combine good looks, practicality and easy care, making them a superb choice for attractive hedging or privacy screening.

Rich, dark green, glossy leaves create a dense and stylish backdrop that enhances almost any outdoor space. In spring, clusters of fragrant white flowers add another layer of interest while providing a valuable food source for visiting pollinators.

Portuguese Laurel is hardy and thrives in a wide range of soil types, including chalky and clay conditions. It tolerates partial shade but performs particularly well in sunny garden positions, making it adaptable to many settings. Ideal for hedging, plants grow to a manageable height and width with minimal pruning, allowing you to shape them as required while keeping maintenance to a minimum.

These versatile plants offer far more than attractive foliage. They provide privacy, wind protection and year-round greenery, while good resistance to common pests and diseases makes them a dependable choice even for less experienced gardeners. Whether planted in the ground or grown in large containers, Portuguese Laurel makes a handsome addition to patios, pathways and boundary lines.

Supplied as a set of 12 established plants in 9cm pots, ready to plant.

Top Tips
Potted plants can be planted at any time of the year as long as the soil is not frozen or waterlogged.
Care Information

Planting Advice for your Portuguese Laurel Prunus lusitanica Angustifolia:

  • Grow Portuguese Laurel in well-drained soil in any sunny or partially shaded site.
  • Dig a planting hole three times the width of the roots you're planting and mix some well-rotted compost or manure with the soil from the hole and use this to re-fill one the shrub is in place.
  • We've found that a square hole is better than a round one as the new roots, once they reach the edges, they tend to grow in a circle round the circumference of the hole whereas when they reach the corners of a square hole, they find it easier to grow through.
  • Before planting soak container-grown shrubs thoroughly and allow to drain.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Add Mycorrhizal fungi to the roots when planting to help plants establish quicker.
  • Place your shrub in the hole at the same level at the pot then refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball and water well.
  • Mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc

Aftercare advice for Portuguese Laurel:

  • Keep plants well-watered while they establish
  • Hardy to -15C, protect from cold winds as it is these that tend to cause the most damage to the young shoots.

Pruning Advice for Prunus lusitanica Angustifolia:

  • Hedges may be trimmed in summer to keep them tidy and shaped.
