Description

Taxus baccata, the classic Yew hedge, is one of those plants that truly stands the test of time. There's a reason it's been used for centuries to create structure and elegance in gardens.

Yew forms a dense, evergreen hedge that stays neat, thick and healthy for decades with just a simple annual trim. And whether you want a formal boundary, a soft natural screen, or even sculpted topiary shapes, these plants give you all the options.

The deep green, needle-like foliage keeps its colour year-round, providing structure and privacy through all seasons. Incredibly hardy too - frost, drought, shade, exposure... Yew shrugs them all off once established.

This is a native species, so it blends naturally into British landscapes and offers habitat and cover for birds and wildlife. It's also surprisingly forgiving if you miss a cut here or there, it'll bounce back and keep its form.

Supplied as a set of 12 established plants, 25-35cm tall, in 8cm pots, ready to plant.

Top Tips

Potted plants can be planted any time of the year, at 4 plants per liner Metre of hedge. Do not trim for 2 years after planting.

Care Information
  • To plant, space plants approx 20-30cm (3/4-1ft).
  • Water your plants well and dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary to lighten heavy, poor soil.
  • Remove the plant from its pot and tease out a few of the roots.
  • Place your plant in the hole at the same level at the pot then refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with your heel, avoiding the root ball.
  • Water well and mulch around the base of the plant with a collar, compost, gravel, bark etc - Yew needs plenty of water in the first couple of seasons but should not sit in waterlogged soil.
