Description

True blue flowers are like gold dust in the garden! Especially those that bloom in partial shade and for as long as 'Blue Heron'. That is why this Corydalis is such a treasure.

This hardy perennial brings rich, sapphire-blue blooms to the shadier parts of your garden and keeps flowering for months.

Starting in April, it bursts into bloom with elegant, scented, trumpet-shaped blue flowers held above upright red stems.

The flowers keep coming right through to early autumn. You might expect a plant with this much flair to be fussy, but it is anything but. Hardy, compact and low maintenance, it thrives year after year with very little effort.

It grows brilliantly in partial shade and is ideal for the front of borders, beneath deciduous trees or in containers placed near the house. The finely divided, soft green-blue foliage is evergreen too, keeping the garden looking fresh when many other perennials disappear completely.

The colour really is something to admire. Few plants produce a genuine blue, but 'Blue Heron' certainly does, and those sapphire flowers sing against the attractive foliage. It is also valuable for pollinators, with bees often visiting the tubular blooms on warmer days.

What to do when it arrives? Simply pot on or plant out, water in, mulch lightly and enjoy vibrant blooms. Division every few years encourages lush growth and regenerates.

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready to plant.

Top Tips
Corydalis may go dormant in very dry summers, so keep it well watered.
Care Information
  • Best grown in humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil in a position of partial shade, avoiding exposed locations. Will grow well in a sunny border if kept regularly watered to stop it becoming dormant in the summer.
  • As the plant dies back the leaves will yellow and the stems wither - at this point you can cut them down to ground level, and you may get a second flush.
  • When new growth emerges in spring, add a slow-release fertiliser to the soil to encourage longer blooming, and continue to feed and water throughout the growing season.
  • Look out for slugs and snails eating young leaves.
  • Propagate by division in autumn.
