Description

A red flamed hardy ornamental grass that brings cross-season interest to the garden! Sophistication awaits, as fresh growth emerges in early spring with a notable red-tinge, with the colour only growing richer and more intense as summer approaches.

Late summer plumes rise from the plant with wiry stems, stretching more than 1m high, dancing even on the gentlest summer breeze. Leaves arch gracefully, while the overall upright form of this versatile grass ensures it is perfect for a bed, border, or even a big planter.

Easy to grow and low maintenance, this grass is hardy in conditions as low as -20C, performing remarkably in your garden’s sunniest spots, with a whole host of soil types tolerated.

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready to plant.

Please note: The leaves of this deciduous variety will naturally die back from autumn and over winter. Do not be alarmed if you receive your freshly potted plant in this state, as it will re-shoot with fresh growth in the following spring.

Top Tips
Keep this ornamental grass well watered across the growing seasons.
Care Information
  • Before planting, prepare the soil by digging over and removing any weeds. Incorporate some well-rotted manure to enrich the soil if necessary.
  • When planting a number of perennials, arrange them on the surface so you can see how they will look once in place.
  • Individually knock out each plant from its container then look at the roots. If they are circling around the compost, it is best to tease them out. To do this, push your fingers into the root ball along the bottom edge and pull. Do this in a couple of places. This should encourage the roots to spread into the surrounding soil.
  • Next use a trowel or spade to create a hole just deep and wide enough to set in the root ball.
  • The aim is to bury just the roots, leaving the bases of the stems (when in growth in summer) or the shoots (in spring) above ground.
  • Firm back around the soil, using your hand for small clumps and your heel on larger areas.
  • Water in well to settle the soil and prevent desiccation.

To Prune:

  • Leave the foliage on the plant across winter to retain some structure and movement. You'll be thankful for this interest when other perennials and grasses have died back for the season.
  • Remember though, old foliage will need to be cut back before the fresh growth can break through. Shear the plant down close to the ground towards the end of winter.
