Description

A late-season show-off that fires up the garden just when many other plants are packing up for the year. Colquhounia 'Nepalese Flame' is a low maintenance, wildlife friendly shrub.

From late summer to autumn, it erupts with upright spikes of vivid orange-red flowers tinged in gold. They look almost flame-like, especially when the sun catches them, and they really standout against the scented, felty foliage beneath.

The flowers are tubular and they attract late-flying bees and butterflies, helping to extend the pollinator party in your garden well beyond midsummer.

Plus, 'Nepalese Flame' is easy to grow, becoming hardy and drought tolerant once established. Just give it a sunny, sheltered position in well-drained soil and mulch around the base in colder areas to protect it in its first winter.

Supplied as an established plant in a 9cm pot, ready to plant.

Top Tips
Avoid waterlogging at any time of year, as soggy soil is the main enemy of this otherwise easy-going plant.
Care Information

On Arrival:

  • Carefully unpack your plant as soon as possible after receiving it.
  • If the compost feels dry to the touch, give it a light watering straight away.
  • Place the plant outside in a bright, sheltered spot while you prepare for planting.
  • Ideally, plant out within a few days of arrival for best results.

Planting In The Ground:

  • Choose a sunny, sheltered position with free-draining soil.
  • Dig a hole twice as wide as the pot and just slightly deeper.
  • Gently remove the plant from its pot, teasing out any tightly wound roots if necessary.
  • Place it into the hole, ensuring the top of the rootball sits roughly level with the surrounding soil.
  • Backfill with a mix of garden soil and some multi-purpose compost to enrich the planting hole.
  • Firm gently and water thoroughly to settle the soil around the roots.

Planting In Pots:

  • Pick a large container at least 30-40cm wide, with good pre-inserted drainage holes - or drill your own!
  • Use a gritty, free-draining compost - a mix of multi-purpose compost and horticultural grit or perlite is ideal.
  • Aim to plant at the same depth it was in the supplied nursery pot.
  • Water well and place your container in a sunny, yet sheltered spot.

Ongoing Aftercare:

  • Water regularly during the first season to help roots establish. Once mature, Colquhounia become drought tolerant and need watering only during prolonged spells of dry weather.
  • Apply a slow-release general-purpose fertiliser in early spring to encourage strong growth and abundant flowering.
  • In early spring, lightly prune back any frost-damaged stems to healthy wood. Harder pruning can keep the plant compact if needed.
  • A winter hardy variety. In colder areas, protect young plants with a thick mulch around the base in late autumn, or fleece if severe frost is forecast.
