Description

Stop and stare at this stunning Agapanthus! This recent African Lily introduction brings serious summer drama, with near-black buds opening into rich violet-purple trumpet blooms held above neat, strappy foliage. Better still, this is a reblooming agapanthus, bred to flower for far longer than many older varieties, bringing colour through summer and into early autumn.

The upright flower stems add height and structure to displays, while the compact habit means it fits beautifully into patio pots, sunny borders, courtyard gardens and smaller spaces. Agapanthus also love container growing, and a pot-grown plant can be moved into a more sheltered spot if very cold winter weather is forecast.

Give 'Poppin' Purple' a sunny position and well-drained soil, and it will reward you with a bold, elegant display. Once established, agapanthus are naturally drought tolerant, making them a smart choice for modern gardens where summers can be dry and gardeners do not want needy plants demanding attention every five minutes. It is hardy, but in colder or wetter gardens, a winter mulch or some pot protection will help keep it happy.

Supplied as an established plant in a 3 litre pot, ready to plant and enjoy.

Top Tips
  • You will often get more flowers when the roots are restricted, so this is certainly a plant that does better in a pot, which also makes it easier to protect during the winter.
Care Information
  • Water your plant well prior to planting.
  • Dig a hole a little deeper and 3 x wider than the nursery pot.
  • Add a soil conditioner such as well-rotted manure to the earth removed from the hole if necessary.
  • Tease out a few of the roots before planting in the ground.
  • Place your plant in the hole so it sits just at surface level.
  • Refill the hole with the earth removed (backfilling).
  • Firm in the soil with you heel, avoiding the root ball.
  • Feed with a general-purpose fertiliser monthly from spring until flowering, then, from the end of September reduce watering and feeding to allow the foliage to harden.
  • In colder parts of the UK, cover the crown of the plant with a deep, dry mulch to protect the plants from hard frosts, or grow in a pot so they can be overwintered in an unheated greenhouse.
